Everyday Mindfulness

Every day, we experience thousands of thoughts per day. We think of our worries, memories, day-dreams, and reminders such as "I need to remember to drop into the shop after work to buy milk" or "I still need to buy Aunty Carol a present". Therefore, although technically we are present in our environment we are not always emotionally present. This can cause us to feel unfulfilled or feel like we are missing out on life. That is where mindfulness can play a huge part in helping us feel more connected to the world around us. It goes without saying, that often life is busy and fast-paced, and we may not have the time or energy to do mindfulness activities for a long period of time. However, the great thing about mindfulness is that it can be easily done in many aspects of your day-to-day life. Here is a few ways you can practice mindfulness in your day

  • 1.Mindful Eating

Whilst eating your lunch or breakfast, put aside your mobile or newspaper. Take a moment to fully appreciate your meal. Notice the smells, the textures, and the flavours. Let yourself eat slowly and savour each mouthful, taking your time to fully immerse yourself in the experience. How does it make you feel?

  • 2.Whilst waiting

It goes without saying, that waiting for the bus or even for an appointment can be boring. So often we may try to entertain ourselves by mindlessly scrolling on our social media, or get caught up in our own thoughts. Whilst waiting, take a moment to take in the environment. For instance, if you are waiting at a bus-stop, notice how it feels to sit on the bench. Observe the trees or the birds that fly past, and also the weather. Is it sunny? Is there a light breeze?

  • 3.When you are with someone

When you spend time with someone, fully engage yourself in the experience. Put aside your phone or any other distractions. Notice the sound of the voice and really listen to what they share with you. Take in their facial expressions and body language.

  • 4.Whilst doing chores

Whilst doing a chore take a moment to be fully present and engage with the task at hand. For instance, whilst washing dishes, notice the smell of the dishwashing liquid, the warmth of the water, the feel of the dishes, and the sounds around you.

  • 5.Mindful shower

Take a mindful shower, and immerse yourself into the experience. Use nice-smelling lotions and focus on the smells and the way it feels. Notice the temperature of the water and the way it feels on your body, observe as it runs down the drain. If you are washing your hair, really observe the smells and the feel of the shampoo and conditioner as you massage it into you scalp.

Remember, there are many different ways to practice mindfulness and sometimes different things will work at different times. Enjoy and embrace each experience, and if you would like to learn more about mindfulness speak to one our friendly lived experienced workers on 1800 013 755
