It's inevitable, sometimes life comes and knocks us down. In moments like these, resilience is an incredible skill to have, to allow us to recover and grow from life's challenges. Over time, learning the ability to be knocked down and being able to bounce back will allow you to become a more resilient and stronger individual. Here are 10 simple ways to improve your resilience.
1. Reward yourself
It can often be difficult to look back and acknowledge our accomplishments because they might not be major. However, sometimes it's important to remember that small things like getting out of the house and going grocery shopping, or doing the washing are also achievements. Remember to be kind to yourself.
2. Keeping going
We are only human and no one is perfect, and everyone is going to make mistakes. Accept we can't change what's happened in the past and focus on moving forward. Learn from past mistakes and view them as lessons to help you become a better version of yourself. Resilient people know that failure isn't about how many times you get knocked down but rather refusing to try again.
3. Be open-minded
Often the things that happen to us in life are inevitable; which is why being flexible is so important. Being flexible can help you view the changes in your life as new opportunities rather than downfalls.
4. Take Care
When we have so many things happening, it can be difficult to stop thinking about deadlines or bills, and focus on ourselves. However, it's important to remember to take care of yourself especially when you are feeling stressed. Take a moment and put your work aside to have a hot cup of tea or go for a walk around the block, or do any form of activity you enjoy.
5. Confide and stay connected
Sometimes when are going through a tough time, it can be easy to pull away from our loved ones. However, even the most resilient people need someone they can trust and confide in. Don't be afraid to share what you are going through and to ask for help.
6. Look for the positives
It can be difficult to see the silver lining in situations when all we can think about is how unfortunate we feel. However, many hard and stressful situations have some form of silver lining. Perhaps our car broke down and we have been forced to take the public transport to work.Maybe during this trip we have noticed for the first time the beautiful scenic trip that the train takes as it passes from the suburbs into the city.
7. Challenge
Challenge your pessimistic thinking and thoughts that tell you that you will fail. To help, reflect on past difficult situations that you have faced. Take a moment to reflect and think of some of the ways that you have conquered these past challenges. When you remind yourself that you achieved things in the past, it can be much easier to view the new challenge as something you are capable of handling.
8. Find Meaning
Everyone has something different that brings happiness and meaning into their life. When you find something that gives you purpose it can help you bounce back quicker because you are able to see things from a wider perspective. What brings meaning into your life can be anything whether it be family or friends, creating art or travelling.
9. Take Action
When we are met with a tough problem, sometimes the most appealing option is to avoid dealing with it. However, putting off the issue can make it become worse and make it seem scarier. Actively working on the solution and taking steps to resolve the issue can be beneficial to you by helping you feel more in control.
10.Patience
Resilience isn't an easy skill that's acquired overnight. It takes practice, patience, and reflection. So if you are faced with a difficult situation and struggle to cope, don't be harsh on yourself. Focus on yourself and what you have accomplished so far, and keep working on these skills to become a more resilient individual.
